The Three Parts That Usually Fail

Three parts sit behind nearly every cistern fault: the inlet valve, outlet valve and seals, and each one has a symptom it owns.

  1. Inlet valve

The inlet valve refills the cistern after each flush and closes when the float reaches its level. A worn or blocked inlet valve fills slowly, drips constantly, or never stops filling at all.

  2. Outlet valve

The outlet valve holds water in the cistern between flushes. A worn washer lets it seep into the pan, the cistern keeps refilling, and the loo runs.

  3. Seals and float

Perished rubbers leak at the joints they were meant to close, and a float adjusted too low leaves the cistern short, which shows as a half-hearted flush.

A weak flush can also come from spray holes beneath the rim that have blocked up, or a flush button that sticks halfway. Wider fixture work sits under tap and toilet plumbing, and single-tap jobs under tap repairs.

Repair a Toilet or Replace the Cistern

The price of a toilet repair depends on which part has failed and whether the porcelain is cracked. Access around the cistern and its mini stop matters too. We put the figure in writing as a fixed quote once we have seen the job.

A few points decide which way a job leans:

  1. A crack in the porcelain ends the repair option

A split cistern or pan is swapped, not glued, and that is where repair stops.

  2. Repeated repairs tip the balance

A cistern that has had two new washers inside a year is usually simpler to swap whole than to keep servicing.

  3. New suites carry their own marks

Any new pan or cistern must carry WaterMark certification before it can be legally installed, along with registration under the national water efficiency scheme.

Silent Leaks and Sewer Smells

A leaking loo gives itself away at three spots: the cistern, the base where the pan sits on the floor, and the supply connection feeding it.

Water pooling around the base points to the pan connector seal or a cracked pan. A leak under the cistern usually comes from the stop tap, sometimes labelled a mini stop, or the braided hose that supplies it. Damp between cistern and pan means the rubber joining the two has had it.

You can check for a silent leak yourself. A splash of food colouring in the cistern, left unflushed, tells the story. Colour drifting into the bowl means water is escaping, and one flush clears it because the dye leaves ceramic unstained.

Sewer air in the room with nothing damp to explain it points lower down. The rubbers where the pan joins the drain can perish or shift, and smell slips past them into the bathroom.

Toilet Repairs for Owners and Tenants

Queensland leaves only three cistern parts outside its licensing rules: the drop valve washer, the float valve washer and the suction cup rubber. The QBCC lists those as unregulated work anyone with the right skill may swap, as long as the result still meets the standards.

The rest of the work on a loo is minor work: a QBCC licensee carries it out, and neither a council permit nor a Form 4 applies.

Rentals add a duty on top. Under Queensland tenancy law a loo that will not flush, or one that is cracked, sits on the emergency repair list. The tenant tells the owner or agent straight away, and the owner or manager is responsible for arranging the repair.

Plenty of these calls come out of unit blocks, from the flats near the railway interchange to the streets around Enoggera Fire Station. A shared riser can turn one unit's fault into a strata job, and common services sit with the body corporate. Our outdoor tap page covers the garden-side fixtures, and a blocked pan belongs with the blocked drains team.

Toilet Repair Questions From Enoggera

Call (07) 3524 0766

What makes a toilet keep running after a flush?

A worn outlet washer is the usual culprit, with water slipping past it into the pan between flushes so the cistern never stops topping up. An inlet valve that will not close does the same. Either way the loo never settles and the meter keeps ticking.

Why does my toilet smell like sewage?

The rubbers that seal the pan into the drain line can perish or move, letting sewer air past. We look over the pan connector, renew what has perished, and reseal the joint.

Can I fix a leaking toilet myself in Enoggera?

Yes, but only three cistern parts qualify: a drop valve washer, a float valve washer and the suction cup rubber, all listed by the QBCC as unregulated work. The finished job still has to meet the standards. Everything else is minor work for a QBCC licensee.

Should I repair or replace an old toilet?

Repair it while the porcelain is sound and the fault is one worn valve or seal. Replace it when the cistern or pan is cracked, or when one repair follows another and patching costs more than a new suite.

Can a cracked cistern or pan be repaired?

No. Once the porcelain itself cracks, repair gives way to replacement of the cistern or the pan. Glue will not hold a stressed bowl for long, and we can supply and fit a certified replacement instead.
