Plumber, Drainer and Gasfitter Licences Explained
In Queensland, a person needs an occupational licence to do plumbing and drainage work. Whoever carries the job as a business also needs a contractor licence, and the QBCC issues both.
The two licences prove different things:
Occupational licence
the holder has the skills for the work itself.
Contractor licence
the firm can carry the job financially and is trained to run it.
Three classes then split the work:
Plumber
covers plumbing work, apart from anything requiring a separate endorsement.
Drainer
looks after drainage work under the ground, again minus jobs needing their own endorsement.
Gasfitter
Queensland reserves gas work for licensed gasfitters, meaning every job that fits, removes, changes, repairs, services, tests or certifies a gas system, pipework included. Our gas fitting work page explains what that means for your appliances.
Before gas work starts, you are entitled to ask to see the worker's gas work licence.

Paperwork and Inspections After a Job
Two bodies share the checking: the QBCC licenses plumbers, records notifiable work and chases unlicensed work, while Brisbane City Council processes applications, issues permits and inspects.
After a job, the paperwork that reaches you includes:
A Form 4 copy
after notifiable work, going to you or the person who booked the job. If one never arrives, the QBCC can provide a copy.
A compliance certificate for the gas work
after a new gas installation or an alteration finishes. The gasfitter hands it over straight away and files a copy with the network operator inside 5 days.
The QBCC's public registers show whether a plumber holds a licence, and searching your address reveals whether a Form 4 sits on the property's record. You may also ask the council to check notifiable work whenever you like, and if it contacts the occupier inside a year of the notice, an inspector may attend, provided the occupier agrees.
Diagnose, Quote, Repair and Test
- 1

You tell us what's wrong
The job starts with your account of the fault, which sets what we bring and where we look first.
- 2

We diagnose on site
The plumber examines the fixture, the lines feeding it and the access, then names the cause before touching a tool.
- 3

We quote a fixed price
You get a fixed quote before work begins, with flat-rate pricing and no hidden fees. Nothing goes ahead until you approve it.
- 4

We test and hand over the records
The finished work gets tested, and any Form 4 or gas certificate is prepared for you before we leave.

Questions About Licensing and Our Work
Call (07) 3524 0766Does plumbing work in Enoggera come with a warranty?
Yes, our labour carries a lifetime labour warranty, and our Fix-It-or-It's-Free guarantee backs it (T&Cs apply).
Who inspects plumbing work in an Enoggera home?
Brisbane City Council issues the permits and carries out inspections, and you can ask it to check notifiable work whenever you like. The QBCC handles licensing and keeps the record of notifiable jobs.
What can I do if plumbing work turns out faulty?
Raise the problem with the plumber first. If the job seems unlicensed, defective or non-compliant, you can complain to the QBCC online.
Do you work on units and rentals as well as houses?
Yes, we take jobs for owners who live in, landlords, tenants and unit owners alike. A rental needs the owner or agent to approve the work, and a unit may put shared valves and risers under the body corporate.
